Practice with a Purpose
Accelerated Reader (AR) is an individualized reading program that makes reading practice more effective for every student. It is reasonable for students to begin using the AR program anytime between kindergarten and first grade. Naturally, students who begin the program sooner will have read more books; however, the progression through the lower levels needs to remain consistent throughout grades K-2, regardless of when a student begins the program.
The order of progression through the lowest AR book levels for students in grades K-2 is as follows:
85-90% of the 66 white level AR books, then
85-90% of the 125 red level AR books
The purpose of completing most of the white level books first is to provide additional practice in word analysis, fluency, vocabulary expansion, and comprehension. These skills are best practiced in lower level books because less effort is spent on decoding words.
Once students in second grade take the Iowa Test of Basic Skills, their reading score can be converted to a Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) range.
